Reading: First, review the section on plagiarism in Field Guide (464-474) and the section on integrating sources in Little Seagull (82-89). Then read Andrew Leonard’s argumentative essay “Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization” (131-135) and respond to it in writing (see below). Accessing Leonard’s essay online is recommended, so that you may view the relevant clips.
Writing: Compose a typed, 300-500 word (1-1.5 double spaced pages) argumentative essay in response to Leonard’s essay. You may agree with him, disagree, or take some moderate position on American consumerism, but be sure to have a clear, central point (thesis). Secondary research is unneeded, and personal or anecdotal evidence for your point of view is welcome. But do be sure to integrate at least two quotes and two paraphrases from Leonard’s piece into yours. Bring two copies of this essay to class tomorrow.
